The Tale of the Greedy Farmer
Long ago, in a quiet village nestled between rolling hills, lived a wealthy farmer known not for his kindness, but for his insatiable greed. He hoarded grain, land, and gold, yet always hungered for more. Neighbors whispered that his heart was as dry as the cracked earth in summer.
One day, a mysterious stranger arrived, cloaked in dusty robes. He offered the farmer a peculiar deal: walk as far as he could in a single day, and every inch of ground he covered would become his—so long as he returned to his starting point before the sun dipped below the horizon.
"All this land, for just one day’s walk?" the farmer exclaimed, his eyes gleaming. He saw endless fields, barns, and harvests stretching as far as the eye could see. At dawn, he set off with quick, greedy steps, claiming valley after valley. The sun climbed high, and still he pushed forward, ignoring his aching legs, his thirst, the golden glow signaling evening’s approach. As shadows lengthened, he realized he was too far out. Desperate, he broke into a sprint, stumbling over rocks and roots, heart pounding. He reached the starting point just as the last sliver of sun vanished—but collapsed, gasping, and died on the very spot he began.
In the end, he was buried in a small plot—six feet long. The villagers shook their heads, whispering, “All that greed… for so little ground.”
