The Origins of Search Engine Optimization

The story of SEO kicked off in the 1990s as the internet started expanding rapidly. Back then, early search engines like AltaVista, Lycos, and the Yahoo Directory were created to help people navigate this brand-new digital frontier and make sense of a growing world wide web.

In those early days, optimizing a website was surprisingly straightforward. You didn't need complex strategies or massive budgets. Simply dropping the right keywords into your meta tags and submitting your URL to a web directory was often enough to push your page right to the top of the search results.

Of course, the web didn't stay that simple for long. As the internet grew and search engines became smarter, people quickly figured out how to game the system by stuffing pages with keywords. This forced search engines to evolve, shifting away from basic keyword matching toward sophisticated algorithms focused on quality, relevance, and user experience. What started as a few tricks in the '90s eventually grew into the dynamic, data-driven industry we rely on today.
