What Is Type 4 Plastic?

When you're handed a plastic grocery bag at the checkout counter, chances are you're holding type 4 plastic—also known as low-density polyethylene, or LDPE. Lightweight, flexible, and highly durable, LDPE is commonly used in plastic bags, cling wrap, dry-cleaning films, and even some squeezable bottles.

Technically, LDPE is recyclable, but that doesn’t always translate to actual recycling. Many curbside programs don’t accept type 4 plastics because they can jam sorting machinery or contaminate batches of other recyclables. Instead, they often end up in landfills—or worse, in our natural environment—despite efforts to recycle them.

The reality is that recycling infrastructure varies widely by location. While some grocery stores offer drop-off points for plastic bags, the process is inconsistent and underutilized. As a result, even though LDPE can be reprocessed into new products like composite lumber or trash can liners, it rarely gets the chance.

What's more, the environmental cost of producing and disposing of these thin films adds up quickly. They’re derived from fossil fuels, and their lightweight nature makes them prone to blowing away, contributing to litter and posing risks to wildlife.

Given the limitations of recycling, reducing reliance on type 4 plastics is a smarter long-term solution. Reusable cloth bags, for instance, offer a simple and effective alternative. Awareness and behavior change are just as critical as recycling capabilities when it comes to tackling the plastic problem.

So while type 4 plastic may be technically recyclable, its environmental footprint reminds us that the best waste is the waste we never create.
