Rubbing Alcohol vs. Hydrogen Peroxide: Which Kills Fungus Better?
When it comes to tackling stubborn fungi, two common household items often come into play: rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide. Both are effective at killing fungal cells, but they work differently and are better suited to different situations.
Rub grinding alcohol, typically isopropyl alcohol at a 70% concentration, acts quickly on contact. It disrupts the proteins and cell membranes of fungi, making it a fast-acting solution. Because of its speed, it’s often preferred for disinfecting hard, non-porous surfaces like glass, metal, or tile. However, its strength comes with a downside—rubbing alcohol can damage more delicate materials. Porous surfaces like wood, granite, or even some painted finishes may discolor or degrade with repeated use.
On the other hand, hydrogen peroxide is slightly slower but offers broader antimicrobial action, including against bacteria and viruses. It works by releasing oxygen and creating an oxidative environment that fungi can’t survive in. It’s gentler on materials and safer for use on a wider range of surfaces, including some that are more sensitive. Many people also appreciate that it breaks down into water and oxygen, leaving no toxic residue.
So, which is better? If speed is key and you’re working on a non-porous surface, rubbing alcohol may be your best bet. But if you're dealing with a more delicate material or want a milder, eco-friendlier option, hydrogen peroxide is a solid choice. Ultimately, the decision depends on the surface, the type of fungus, and how much time you have. Both have their place in a well-stocked cleaning toolkit—knowing when to use each makes all the difference.
