Vinegar vs. Hydrogen Peroxide: Which Kills Mold Better?
When mold starts creeping across your bathroom tiles or basement walls, it’s natural to reach for a quick fix. Two common household solutions often recommended are white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. But which one actually works better?
According to evidence-based cleaning practices, both have their strengths—but in different ways. White vinegar, particularly the distilled kind with its 5% acidity, penetrates porous surfaces and kills mold at a shallow level while also eliminating surface mildew. It’s a go-to for many because it’s inexpensive, readily available, and effective on non-porous materials like glass or tile.
On the other hand, hydrogen peroxide (3%) takes a more aggressive approach. It works through oxidation, breaking down both mold cell walls and the proteins in surface mildew. This makes it especially useful for a more thorough treatment, particularly on grout, stone, or sealed wood. Because it leaves no toxic residue and breaks down into water and oxygen, it’s also a favorite for eco-conscious households.
While vinegar may slightly edge out in cost and availability, hydrogen peroxide offers a broader antimicrobial action. For best results, many experts recommend using them separately—never mixed, as combining them can create ineffective or irritating byproducts. Apply either with a spray bottle, let sit for 10–15 minutes, then wipe clean.
In real-world use, the choice often comes down to the surface and the severity of the growth. For light mold, vinegar often suffices. For stubborn or recurring issues, hydrogen peroxide may be the smarter pick. Either way, prompt action and proper ventilation are key to keeping mold at bay for good.
