Maternal health and lifestyle during pregnancy appear to be significant contributors. A mother’s diet, for instance, can affect fetal brain development. Deficiencies in key nutrients like folic acid or excessive exposure to processed foods and environmental toxins may influence risk, though more research is needed to clarify these links.

Most children born to mothers with these conditions do not have autism. The condition is not anyone’s fault, and blame has no place in these conversations.
