Liquids That Evaporate Quickly and Those That Don’t

When we think of evaporation, we often picture water drying up in the sun. But not all liquids behave the same way. Some vanish into thin air in minutes, while others barely budge, even under heat. The rate at which a liquid evaporates depends on its vapor pressure—essentially, how eagerly its molecules escape into the air.

Highly volatile liquids like acetone, alcohol, and ether evaporate almost instantly at room temperature. These are the go-to choices when quick drying is needed, like in cleaning electronics or removing nail polish. Gasoline also evaporates rapidly, which is why you can smell it so easily—and why it’s so flammable.

Interestingly, the liquids that evaporate slowly are often surprising.

Take mercury, for example. Despite being a liquid metal at room temperature, it evaporates very slowly—about 1/10,000th the rate of water. Yet, its vapor is toxic, so even slow evaporation matters. Heavy oils, bitumens, and concentrated sulfuric acid are even more stubborn. Sulfuric acid, in fact, has a vapor pressure roughly 1/20,000th that of water, making it nearly non-volatile. That’s why it’s used in labs and industry where stability matters.

Other slow evaporators include silicone oils and polyethylene glycols—common in lubricants and cosmetics—thanks to their long molecular chains that resist turning into vapor. Then there’s concentrated sugar syrup, like molasses, which holds onto water tightly and evaporates slowly due to its high viscosity and low vapor pressure.

So while some liquids seem to disappear before your eyes, others linger, quietly defying evaporation. It’s a subtle reminder that even in something as simple as drying, the hidden properties of liquids shape how they interact with the world.
