What Your Body Is Really Made Of
It might sound surprising, but nearly all of you—about 99%—comes down to just six chemical elements. Oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus are the heavy hitters in the human body, forming everything from your DNA to your bones.
Oxygen leads the pack, making up around 65% of your body weight—mostly because it's a key part of water, which fills about 60% of your cells. Carbon, the backbone of organic molecules, comes in second, helping build proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Hydrogen, though lightweight, is everywhere thanks to water and organic compounds. Nitrogen is essential for amino acids and nucleic acids like DNA. Calcium? That’s your skeletal support system. And phosphorus isn’t just in your bones—it’s critical for ATP, the energy currency of your cells.
Another five elements chime in with about 0.85% of your total mass. Sulfur helps stabilize protein structures, potassium and sodium keep your nerves firing and fluids balanced, chlorine manages cellular pH and fluid levels, and magnesium quietly supports over 300 enzyme reactions—from muscle function to energy production.
The remaining fraction—just 0.15%—includes trace elements like iron (for blood), zinc (for immunity), copper, iodine, and others. You only need tiny amounts, but they’re irreplaceable.
So while we’re made of stardust in the poetic sense, scientifically speaking, we’re mostly oxygen and carbon, shaped by chemistry into something that breathes, moves, and wonders about its own composition. It’s humbling to realize that such complexity arises from just a handful of elements, working together in perfect balance.
