How Medication Can Help Close a PDA in Premature Babies

Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) is a common condition in premature infants, where a blood vessel called the ductus arteriosus — which normally closes shortly after birth — remains open. This can lead to breathing difficulties and strain on the heart, especially in newborns born well before their due date.

Thankfully, in many cases, medication can help close the PDA without surgery.

Doctors often turn to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, or the prescription medication indomethacin (sold under the brand name Indocin). These drugs are typically effective only in premature babies and are not used in full-term infants or older children for this purpose.

The reason these medications work lies in their ability to block prostaglandins — hormones that keep the ductus arteriosus open during fetal development. In premature babies, the body may still be producing high levels of prostaglandins, preventing the vessel from closing naturally. By inhibiting these hormones, NSAIDs give the baby’s body a chance to close the PDA on its own.

Ibuprofen and indomethacin are usually given intravenously in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and treatment is closely monitored to ensure effectiveness and safety. While these medications successfully close the PDA in many cases, some infants may still require surgical or catheter-based intervention if the vessel remains open.

Early diagnosis and timely treatment are crucial. With the right medical approach, most premature babies respond well, paving the way for better heart and lung function as they grow. As with any medical treatment in newborns, decisions are highly individualized, based on the baby’s weight, gestational age, and overall health.
