Which Metal Burns in Water?

It sounds counterintuitive—something burning in water? After all, we usually use water to put out fires. Yet, certain metals don’t just react with water; they ignite, sometimes exploding on contact.

The culprits are the alkali metals: lithium (Li), sodium (Na), potassium (K), rubidium (Rb), cesium (Cs), and francium (Fr). These elements sit in Group 1 of the periodic table and are famously reactive. When dropped into water, they don’t just fizz—they can burst into flames or detonate with startling force.

Sodium and potassium, commonly demonstrated in chemistry classes, skitter across the water’s surface, releasing hydrogen gas as they react. The heat of the reaction is often enough to ignite the hydrogen, causing a small fire or even a pop. Francium, though extremely rare and radioactive, would theoretically react the most dramatically—if you could ever get enough of it to test (which, in reality, you can’t).

The reason behind this dramatic behavior lies in their atomic structure. Alkali metals have a single electron in their outer shell, which they are desperate to lose. Water provides the perfect opportunity: the metal donates that electron, splitting water molecules, releasing hydrogen gas, and generating heat—all of which can lead to fire.
