Which Metals React Violently?
When it comes to pure chemical reactivity, the alkali metals stand out from the rest of the periodic table. This group includes lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, cesium, and francium.
Unlike ordinary metals, these elements possess a single electron in their outermost shell, which they are extremely eager to give away. Because of this atomic structure, they are not found in their pure forms in nature; instead, they are always bonded to other elements.
When pure alkali metals come into contact with cold water, the reaction is dramatic. They react vigorously and often explosively, releasing hydrogen gas and enough heat to ignite it. As you move down the column from lithium to cesium, the size of the atoms increases, the outer electron is held less tightly, and the reactions become progressively more violent and hazardous.
