Metals and Acid Reactions

When certain metals come into contact with acids, a chemical reaction takes place, typically producing hydrogen gas and a metal salt. Not all metals react the same way; their reactivity depends on their position in the reactivity series.

Magnesium reacts very vigorously with dilute hydrochloric acid. You will notice rapid effervescence as bubbles of hydrogen gas form quickly and the metal dissolves in a short amount of time.

Zinc also reacts with dilute acids like sulfuric acid. Bubbles steadily form around the metal, and the zinc granules gradually diminish as the reaction proceeds.

Iron reacts much more slowly with hydrochloric acid compared to magnesium or zinc. Over time, the reaction produces a characteristic pale green solution containing iron chloride.

Aluminium has an interesting behavior due to a tough protective oxide layer on its surface. When it first meets hydrochloric acid, the reaction is slow, but once that outer layer is penetrated, the reaction becomes quite vigorous.
