Does Music Really Boost IQ?

For years, parents have played Mozart to their children in hopes of giving them a cognitive edge. The idea stems from what’s known as the Mozart effect—a theory popularized in the 1990s suggesting that listening to Mozart’s compositions might temporarily enhance certain types of brain function.

It all began with a study in which participants who listened to Mozart showed brief improvements in spatial reasoning—a skill linked to problem-solving and puzzle completion. These gains appeared on a portion of an IQ test, but they were short-lived, lasting only about 10 to 15 minutes. Importantly, the music didn’t increase overall intelligence—just a temporary uptick in one specific cognitive task.

Despite the hype, there’s no solid evidence that listening to Mozart or any other composer makes you permanently smarter. The brain doesn’t work like that. However, music—especially classical—can improve focus, lower stress, and set the stage for more productive thinking. That might explain why so many people study or work with background music.

Interestingly, learning to play an instrument has far greater cognitive benefits than passive listening. Studies show that musical training in childhood can enhance memory, language skills, and even emotional regulation. But simply pressing play on a Mozart symphony won’t rewire your brain for genius.

So, while the Mozart effect makes for a compelling story, it’s more myth than miracle. That said, if classical music helps you concentrate or lifts your mood, there’s no harm in pressing play. Just don’t expect a leap in IQ points—real cognitive gains come from active engagement, not background noise.
