What to Avoid Eating Before Bed
Struggling to fall asleep? Your late-night snack might be to blame. While a small bite before bed isn’t always problematic, certain foods can disrupt your sleep cycle, making it harder to drift off or stay asleep. Knowing what to avoid can make a real difference in the quality of your rest.
Chocolate is one of the worst offenders. Even in small amounts, it contains caffeine and theobromine, both stimulants that can keep your brain active when it should be winding down. Dark chocolate, in particular, packs a stronger punch than milk chocolate, so it’s best saved for earlier in the day.
Spicy foods like curry may also interfere with sleep. They can cause heartburn or indigestion, especially when lying down, leading to discomfort and restless nights. Similarly, high-fat foods such as cheese and crisps (potato chips) are hard to digest and may trigger acid reflux, disrupting your sleep.
Sweet treats like ice cream or anything loaded with sugar can cause a blood sugar spike followed by a crash, potentially waking you up in the middle of the night. Even seemingly healthy options like raw honey or bananas—while natural—can be problematic in excess due to their sugar content and sleep-related compounds that may not affect everyone the same way.
And while cherries are often praised for their melatonin content, they’re naturally high in sugar, which can be counterproductive if eaten in large quantities before bed.
The key is balance. If you're hungry at night, opt for light, easily digestible snacks like a small handful of nuts or a slice of whole-grain toast. But above all, skip the chocolate, hold off on the curry, and save the ice cream for dessert—hours before bedtime.
