How Clogged Arteries Are Opened

When arteries that supply blood to the heart become narrowed or blocked by plaque buildup, a procedure known as coronary angioplasty can help restore proper blood flow. This minimally invasive treatment is often performed during a cardiac catheterization and is a common solution for people experiencing chest pain or recovering from a heart attack.

During the procedure, a thin tube called a catheter, equipped with a tiny deflated balloon at its tip, is threaded through a blood vessel—usually in the groin or wrist—and guided to the site of the blockage in the heart. Once in place, the balloon is inflated, gently pressing the plaque against the artery walls. This action widens the artery and improves blood flow to the heart muscle.

In most cases, a small wire mesh tube called a stent is placed in the artery to help keep it open. The stent acts like a scaffold, reducing the chances of the artery narrowing again. Some stents are coated with medication that’s slowly released over time, further helping to prevent reblockage.

Angioplasty isn’t open-heart surgery—most patients are awake but sedated, and recovery is typically quick compared to more invasive procedures. Many people feel relief from symptoms like chest pain soon after the procedure. However, it’s not a cure for heart disease. Long-term success depends on lifestyle changes such as adopting a heart-healthy diet, regular exercise, quitting smoking, and taking prescribed medications.

While angioplasty and stenting can be life-saving, they’re part of a broader strategy to manage heart health. Your doctor will determine if this treatment is right for you based on the severity of blockage and overall condition.
