How Scoliosis Impacts the Lungs
When people think about scoliosis, they often picture an abnormal curvature of the spine. But few realize that in severe cases, its effects can extend far beyond posture and back pain. While scoliosis primarily affects the skeletal system, the lungs are the organs most commonly impacted—especially when the condition goes untreated or progresses significantly.
This doesn’t happen in mild cases. Most people with slight spinal curves experience little to no breathing issues. However, in severe or very-severe curvatures, particularly when the curve exceeds 80 to 90 degrees, the rib cage can twist and compress the chest cavity. This reduces the space available for the lungs to expand, limiting their capacity and efficiency. As a result, individuals may experience shortness of breath, fatigue, or decreased stamina—especially during physical activity.
Adults who never received treatment during adolescence are more likely to face these complications. Over time, untreated scoliosis can worsen, leading to long-term changes in lung function. In some cases, this can even contribute to cardiovascular strain, as the heart works harder to compensate for lower oxygen levels.
Thankfully, early detection and intervention—through bracing, physical therapy, or surgery—can help prevent progression and protect lung health. Regular monitoring is key, especially in growing children and teens. The good news is that with proper management, most people with scoliosis lead full, active lives without significant respiratory issues.
So while the spine bears the most visible burden of scoliosis, it’s important to remember that its ripple effects can reach deeper—right into the chest. In the most advanced cases, breathing itself can become a challenge. That’s why timely care isn’t just about appearance or comfort; it’s about preserving vital organ function over the long term.
