How a Patent Ductus Arteriosus Affects Heart and Lung Health
A patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a heart condition where a blood vessel called the ductus arteriosus, which should normally close shortly after birth, remains open. When this happens, blood can flow in the wrong direction—from the aorta back into the pulmonary artery. This abnormal flow means too much blood is sent to the lungs, forcing both the heart and lungs to work harder than they should.
Over time, this extra workload can lead to serious complications. The heart has to pump more forcefully to manage the increased volume, which may cause it to enlarge or weaken. Meanwhile, the lungs are exposed to higher pressure and blood volume, increasing the risk of damage and respiratory issues. One of the most concerning long-term effects is the development of pulmonary hypertension—high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs—which can become life-threatening if left untreated.
Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial. In infants, symptoms may include poor feeding, rapid breathing, and slow growth. In older children or adults with undiagnosed PDA, fatigue or shortness of breath during activity might be the first signs. Treatments range from medication in premature babies to catheter-based procedures or surgery to close the opening.
While small PDAs may not cause immediate problems, regular monitoring is essential to prevent lasting harm. Left untreated, the strain on the cardiovascular system can lead to irreversible changes in heart and lung function. The good news is that with timely care, most people with PDA can go on to live healthy, normal lives.
