Rubbers That Stand Up to Sulfuric Acid

When it comes to handling sulfuric acid, choosing the right rubber material is critical—especially in industrial environments where chemical exposure can quickly degrade unsuitable components. The resistance of a rubber depends heavily on the concentration of the acid, but for diluted sulfuric acid (around 10%), several elastomers perform exceptionally well.

Butyl rubber (IIR) is a top contender thanks to its excellent impermeability and stability in the presence of many acids, including low-concentration sulfuric acid. Its low gas permeability also makes it ideal for linings and seals in chemical storage tanks.

Another reliable option is EPDM rubber. Known for its outstanding heat and weather resistance, EPDM also holds up well against diluted acids and is frequently used in gaskets, hoses, and seals in chemical processing applications.

CSM (Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene), commonly known by the trade name Hypalon, offers strong resistance to oxidation, ozone, and a broad range of chemicals—including dilute sulfuric acid. Its durability in harsh environments makes it a favorite in industrial linings and protective coatings.

For more demanding applications—even within the diluted range—Viton (FKM or FPM) stands out. This synthetic fluoroelastomer provides superior chemical resistance and thermal stability. Though more expensive, Viton’s performance in aggressive chemical environments justifies its use in high-spec seals, O-rings, and tubing.

It’s important to note that resistance can vary with temperature, exposure time, and acid concentration. Always verify compatibility under actual operating conditions. But for 10% sulfuric acid, these four—Butyl, EPDM, CSM, and Viton—offer proven, reliable protection where lesser materials would fail.
