How Long Does a CBT Course Take?
If you're thinking about learning to ride a motorcycle or scooter in the UK, you've probably heard of CBT—Compulsory Basic Training. It's the first step for most new riders, and one of the most frequently asked questions is: how long does it actually take?
The good news is, a CBT course typically lasts just one day. From start to finish, you’ll spend about six to eight hours with your instructor, covering everything from basic controls to riding on the road. Everyone learns at their own pace, so while the structure is standard, the time it takes to feel confident can vary. That’s perfectly normal.
The course is divided into five elements: basic machine safety, riding controls, off-road riding practice, on-road riding, and final feedback. Your instructor will guide you through each stage, giving real-time feedback and helping you improve where needed. They’ll let you know how you're progressing and whether you're meeting the required standard.
At the end of the day, if you’ve demonstrated the necessary skills and awareness, you’ll receive your CBT certificate—commonly known as the CBT (DL196). This allows you to ride on public roads up to certain engine sizes, as long as you display L-plates.
It’s important to remember that while one day might be enough to complete the course, some people may need extra practice before feeling ready. The priority is safety, not speed. So don’t rush it—quality instruction and confidence matter more than ticking a box.
In short, yes, most people finish CBT in a day. But the real value isn’t just in the time spent—it’s in the foundation it builds for a safer, more enjoyable riding experience.
