What Makes Certain Liquids Evaporate So Fast?
Have you ever noticed how a spill of nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol seems to disappear into thin air almost instantly? This happens because certain liquids are volatile, meaning they turn from a liquid into a gas very easily, even at room temperature.
The secret behind this rapid transformation lies in their boiling points. Unlike water, which needs to reach 100 degrees Celsius to boil, volatile liquids have low boiling points. Because the energy required to break the bonds holding their molecules together is relatively small, the ambient heat in a normal room is more than enough to send them flying into the air as vapor.
Common examples of these quick-drying substances are all around us in daily life. Ethanol (found in hand sanitizers and certain drinks), acetone (the main ingredient in nail polish remover), and petrol are all classic examples. Because their molecules are loosely bound and eager to escape into the atmosphere, they don't stick around long in liquid form when exposed to open air.
