What You Should Never Tell ChatGPT

When chatting with AI like ChatGPT, it’s easy to forget you're not speaking to a person who understands privacy the way humans do. While these systems are designed with safeguards, you should never share sensitive personal information—no matter how harmless the conversation seems.

That includes your full name, home address, phone number, email, financial details like credit card numbers, or even your Social Security number. Think of it this way: if you wouldn’t shout it in a crowded room, don’t type it into a chat with an AI.

Even if the platform claims data protection, the internet has taught us to be cautious. While OpenAI states that conversations aren’t used to train models anymore (in most cases), data breaches, accidental logging, or future policy changes are always possible. It only takes one slip-up to expose information that could be misused.

Also, avoid sharing private details about others—your roommate’s phone number, a friend’s medical condition, or your coworker’s salary. Not only is it risky, but it can also compromise someone else’s privacy without their consent.

The truth is, AI doesn’t need your personal data to be helpful. Whether you’re asking for help writing an email, debugging code, or planning a trip, ChatGPT works best when it stays in the role of a tool—not a confidant.

So keep it simple: use AI to explore ideas, not to share secrets. Your safety comes from staying aware, not trusting blindly. A little caution today can save a lot of trouble tomorrow.
