What Vitamin Deficiency Might Be Linked to Gray Hair?

Seeing your first gray hair can be a surprise, especially if it happens earlier than expected. While many assume it’s just a natural part of aging, science shows that premature hair graying (PHG) isn’t always about time—it can also be about what your body might be missing.

Genetics play a big role, sure. If your parents went gray early, chances are you might too. But it’s not the whole story. Researchers have found that certain nutritional deficiencies may contribute to PHG, acting as silent triggers behind the scenes.

One key player? Vitamin B12. This essential nutrient helps maintain healthy nerve and blood cells—and yes, it plays a role in hair pigmentation. A lack of B12 can disrupt melanin production, the pigment that gives hair its color. Vegans and older adults are particularly at risk since B12 is mainly found in animal products and absorption decreases with age.
