Accidentally Touching Muriatic Acid: What You Need to Know
Whether you are cleaning heavy-duty masonry or adjusting the pH balance in a swimming pool, muriatic acid is a common household chemical that requires extreme caution. Formed when hydrogen chloride gas dissolves in water, this substance is simply another name for industrial-grade hydrochloric acid.
If you accidentally touch muriatic acid, the consequences depend heavily on its concentration and how quickly you act. Because both hydrogen chloride and its aqueous form are highly corrosive, immediate contact can cause severe chemical burns, intense skin irritation, redness, and pain. In higher concentrations, it can rapidly destroy skin tissue and lead to permanent scarring.
Should an accidental spill occur, speed is critical. You must immediately flush the affected skin under cool, running water for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Remove any contaminated clothing right away while rinsing to prevent further contact. Avoid scrubbing the skin or applying harsh soaps, oils, or neutralizing agents like baking soda directly to the wound, as the chemical reaction can generate heat and cause secondary thermal burns.
After thorough rinsing, cover the area loosely with a clean, sterile bandage. If the exposure covers a large area, causes severe pain, or leads to blistering, seek emergency medical attention immediately. When working with muriatic acid, always wear heavy-duty rubber gloves, eye protection, and long sleeves to keep your skin safe.
