When Is the Right Time to Stop Using Tampons During Your Period?

Many people wonder when it’s time to stop using tampons during their period—especially as flow tapers off. The good news? You can safely use a tampon right up until your period ends, even if your last few drops come minutes before it’s completely over.

Tampons are designed to handle all stages of your flow, from heavy to light. That means if you’re still seeing a bit of blood—even just spotting—you can keep using tampons without issue. There’s no need to switch to pads prematurely just because your period is winding down.

That said, it’s important to listen to your body. If you’re going hours without needing to change your tampon and feel dryness or discomfort when inserting a new one, it might be a sign your period has ended. Forcing a tampon in when there’s no need can cause irritation or minor injury to the vaginal lining, simply because there’s not enough moisture.

Also, never leave a tampon in for more than 8 hours to reduce the risk of toxic shock syndrome (TSS), a rare but serious condition. If you’re down to just spotting and feel more comfortable switching to a panty liner or light pad, that’s perfectly fine—and often more comfortable.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to your comfort and flow. You don’t need to stop using tampons before your period is truly over. Just be mindful of how you feel and adjust as needed. Your body knows best.
