Where to Find the K-1 Form

If you're part of a partnership, LLC, or S corporation, you’ve likely heard of the Schedule K-1. This tax form is essential—it reports your share of the entity’s income, deductions, and credits. So, where do you find it?

First, you probably don’t need to hunt it down yourself. Most people receive a Schedule K-1 directly from the business or their accountant around tax season. The entity’s tax preparer files Form 1065 (the partnership’s return), and once that’s done, each partner gets a personalized K-1 to use when filing their individual return.

But if you're looking for a sample—maybe to understand the format or prepare early—you can download a copy from the IRS website. The IRS makes Schedule K-1 (Form 1065) available as part of their official forms library. Just search for “Schedule K-1 (Form 1065)” on IRS.gov, and you’ll find both current and prior-year versions. These samples help you see exactly where income, capital gains, and deductions are reported.

Keep in mind: while the sample is useful for reference, your actual K-1 will come from the partnership. It’s typically sent out by March or early April, depending on extensions. If you haven’t received it by then, it’s a good idea to follow up with your tax contact or the entity’s filer.

Bottom line: Don’t stress over finding the form—it’s usually sent to you. But if you’re curious or planning ahead, the IRS has you covered with a downloadable version. Just remember, this isn’t a form you fill out from scratch; it’s a report of what you’re already owed as a partner.
