Microbial mats—dense communities of microorganisms bound together in sticky layers—are among the oldest known ecosystems on Earth. Even in cold seeps on the ocean floor, where hydrocarbons slowly leak from the seabed, microbial mats form vibrant carpets, converting methane and sulfides into usable energy.
These resilient mats are more than biological curiosities—they're living windows into Earth’s distant past. By studying them, scientists gain insights into early life and even the potential for life on other planets with similarly extreme conditions. Far from being relics, microbial mats are quiet survivors, still shaping hidden corners of our world.
