Where Did the Eve Gene Originate?
When scientists talk about the “Eve gene,” they aren’t referring to a biblical figure—but rather to a real woman who lived long ago and whose genetic legacy connects everyone alive today. This concept is known as Mitochondrial Eve, a term used to describe the most recent common ancestor shared by all living humans through the maternal line.
Her existence is traced through mitochondrial DNA, which is passed down almost unchanged from mother to child. By analyzing mutations in this DNA across diverse populations, researchers have pinpointed her roots to East Africa, where modern humans first emerged.
She didn’t live alone, nor was she the only woman of her time—but she is the only woman from that era whose unbroken line of daughters stretches all the way to the present day. All other maternal lines eventually died out over time. Scientists estimate that Mitochondrial Eve lived roughly 100,000 to 230,000 years ago, during a formative period in human evolution.
She is the founding member of Haplogroup L—the root of the human mitochondrial family tree. From her arose subgroups like L0, L1, and eventually all other haplogroups found across the globe today. While she wasn’t the first human woman, she is the one whose genetic signature survived.
This discovery doesn’t suggest a single origin point for all human traits or diversity, but rather reveals a shared thread that binds us. From East Africa, her descendants migrated, adapted, and diversified, spreading across continents and shaping the rich tapestry of human populations we see today.
