Where Soccer Players Get Hurt the Most

Soccer is a physically demanding sport, and injuries are an inevitable part of the game. While players can get hurt anywhere, research shows that certain areas are more vulnerable—especially the dominant leg. In fact, players are 1.6 times more likely to suffer an injury on their preferred side, the one they use for kicking, cutting, and sprinting.

The hip and groin area of the dominant limb stands out as a major trouble spot. Studies indicate a relative risk (RR) of 1.9 for hip/groin injuries on the dominant side, meaning these injuries occur nearly twice as often compared to the non-dominant side. This makes sense: the kicking leg undergoes tremendous stress during acceleration, deceleration, and sharp directional changes—movements repeated constantly during matches and training.

Another common injury zone is the hamstring. With a relative risk of 1.3, dominant leg hamstrings are significantly more prone to strain. These muscles work hard to propel players forward during explosive sprints, but they're also vulnerable when fatigued. Overuse, inadequate warm-ups, or muscle imbalances can all contribute to tears or pulls.

Interestingly, it’s not just about strength or conditioning—it’s about usage. The dominant limb bears the brunt of high-intensity actions, making it a hotspot for overuse and acute injuries alike. That’s why modern training increasingly focuses on balancing strength between limbs and improving mobility to protect the most stressed areas.

Prevention, not just recovery, is key. Coaches and medical staff now prioritize targeted warm-ups, eccentric hamstring exercises, and hip stability drills to reduce the risk. For players, recognizing that their strongest side may also be their weakest link is the first step toward staying on the field.
