Where Scoliosis Causes Pain: Age Makes a Difference

When people think of scoliosis, they often assume it causes noticeable pain—but that’s not always the case. In children and teens, scoliosis typically doesn’t lead to discomfort. Most young individuals with the condition don’t feel pain at all, which is why routine school screenings and early check-ups are so important. The curvature of the spine may be visible, but pain usually isn’t a warning sign in this age group.

The experience changes in adulthood. Adults with scoliosis—especially those with degenerative forms of the condition—may begin to feel symptoms as the spine ages. Over time, wear and tear on the spinal joints and discs can lead to achiness, stiffness, or discomfort, most commonly in the mid to lower back. This type of pain often feels like a persistent soreness, especially after standing or sitting for long periods.

In more advanced cases, scoliosis can affect nearby nerves, particularly the sciatic nerve. When this happens, pain may radiate down one or both legs, sometimes accompanied by numbness or muscle weakness. This nerve compression—commonly referred to as sciatica—can make walking or even simple movements more difficult.

While scoliosis in youth often flies under the radar, adult-onset symptoms can become hard to ignore. The key is early detection and ongoing monitoring. Whether you're a parent noticing postural changes in a teenager or an adult feeling unexplained back stiffness, understanding where and how scoliosis causes pain helps guide timely care and better outcomes.
