What Is Magic Acid?

In the world of chemistry, standard laboratory reagents like sulfuric acid are already considered extremely corrosive, but some chemical mixtures reach an entirely different scale of reactivity. Among these extreme substances, Magic Acid holds a legendary title. First developed by Nobel laureate George Olah and his team in the 1960s, this chemical mixture earned its name when a researcher famously used it to completely dissolve a paraffin wax candleβ€”a stubborn hydrocarbon material normally impervious to conventional acids.

Technically classified as a superacid, Magic Acid is produced by combining fluorosulfuric acid (HSO3F) and antimony pentafluoride (SbF5) in an exact 1:1 molar ratio. In this pairing, antimony pentafluoride acts as a potent Lewis acid, accepting fluoride ions and generating an extraordinarily powerful proton donor that vastly surpasses the proton-yielding strength of pure sulfuric acid.

Because it is far from a benign solvent, handling Magic Acid requires extreme care and specialized non-aqueous environments. However, its exceptional ability to donate protons without water makes it indispensable in advanced organic chemistry.
