Raveena Tandon Opens Up About Turning Down Shah Rukh Khan’s “Darr”

Long before Shah Rukh Khan became the undisputed king of Bollywood romance, he delivered a career-defining performance as the obsessive lover in Darr (1993). But few know that the iconic role almost starred a different leading lady. Raveena Tandon recently revealed she was offered the film—opposite SRK and Juhi Chawla—but ultimately turned it down.

“I used to be uncomfortable with certain kinds of scenes,” Tandon shared, reflecting on her early career. The role eventually went to Juhi Chawla, who played the bubbly, resilient sister caught in the crosshairs of Khan’s chilling obsession. Tandon’s hesitation stemmed from the film’s intense emotional and physical demands, particularly the scenes depicting psychological torment and fear.

At the time, Raveena was just stepping into the industry, and the dark, dramatic tone of Darr didn’t align with the kind of roles she envisioned for herself. Though she later embraced bold choices—earning acclaim for performances in films like Madam X and Aks—she admits that early on, she wasn’t ready to dive into such unsettling territory.

Darr, directed by Yash Chopra, became a landmark in SRK’s journey, showcasing a villainous turn that stunned audiences and cemented his versatility. Juhi Chawla’s chemistry with both SRK and co-star Sunny Deol added emotional depth to the thriller, making it a critical and commercial success.

Tandon’s decision, though a missed opportunity by some measures, highlights the personal boundaries actors sometimes face when choosing roles. In hindsight, she doesn’t regret it. “Every choice shapes your path,” she said. “I walked mine with honesty.”
