Fish with the Lowest PFAS: Smaller and Smarter Choices

When it comes to seafood, not all fish are created equal—especially when PFAS levels are a concern. These "forever chemicals," found in water and soil, can accumulate in fish, particularly in larger, long-lived predatory species. If you're aiming to reduce your exposure, your best bet is to go small.

Salmon, sardines, and anchovies consistently rank among the fish with the lowest PFAS levels. Being lower on the food chain and shorter-lived, these species don’t accumulate as many contaminants over time. Sardines and anchovies, in particular, feed on plankton and don’t bio-magnify toxins like tuna or swordfish do. Wild-caught salmon can be a good option, but surprisingly, some farmed varieties—especially those raised in controlled, clean environments—may actually have lower PFAS exposure than their wild counterparts from polluted waters.

Farmed seafood often gets a bad rap, but when it comes to PFAS, it’s not a clear-cut issue. While no seafood is entirely free of contaminants, farming can limit exposure to industrial pollutants if regulations and water quality are tightly managed. Organic-certified farmed fish, for instance, are often raised with stricter feed and environmental standards, which may further reduce PFAS risks.

So, what should you eat? Stick to smaller, oily fish like sardines and farmed salmon, and limit consumption of large predators like tuna, shark, or king mackerel. These choices not only lower your PFAS intake but also tend to be more sustainable. As awareness grows and testing improves, being selective about your seafood can make a real difference in long-term health. Knowledge, in this case, is more than power—it’s protection.
