Best Fluids for Rehydration at Home

When it comes to rehydrating at home, water is often the simplest and most effective choice. For most adults experiencing mild to moderate dehydration—whether from diarrhea, vomiting, or a fever—simply increasing water intake can make a big difference. It’s accessible, calorie-free, and quickly absorbed by the body.

However, not all fluids are created equal when it comes to rehydration. While drinks like full-strength fruit juice or soft drinks might seem helpful, they can actually worsen diarrhea, especially in children. The high sugar content in these beverages can draw water into the intestines, increasing fluid loss. So, despite their popularity, they’re better avoided during recovery.

For those who sweat heavily—especially during outdoor work or exercise in hot, humid conditions—cool water is your best bet. It helps regulate body temperature and replenishes lost fluids efficiently. Sipping it steadily throughout the day is more effective than drinking large amounts all at once.

For children or individuals with more significant fluid loss, oral rehydration solutions (available over the counter) are often recommended because they contain the right balance of salts and sugars. But for everyday dehydration, plain water usually does the job just fine.

Listen to your body. Thirst, dry mouth, and dark urine are signs you may need more fluids. And when in doubt, stick to water—it’s nature’s original rehydrator.
