Which Insurance Company Denies the Most Claims?
When choosing car insurance, most of us hope we'll never have to file a claim—but when we do, we expect fair treatment. A recent Weiss Ratings study analyzing 2024 data reveals some unsettling figures about claim denial rates among major insurers.
According to the report, Allstate leads the pack in claim denials. Specifically, Allstate Vehicle & Property Insurance Co. closed 50.9% of claims without payment. Its affiliate, Allstate Insurance Co., wasn’t far behind, with a denial rate of 49.8%. This means nearly half of all claims filed with these companies were rejected—raising concerns for policyholders counting on support after an accident or loss.
Coming in a close second is USAA, with a 49.5% denial rate. While USAA has long been praised for its service to military families, these numbers suggest even highly regarded companies may routinely reject claims. It’s important to note that not all denials are unjust—some result from policy exclusions, lapsed coverage, or fraudulent filings. Still, such high percentages warrant a closer look.
These figures don't necessarily mean you should avoid these insurers altogether. Coverage, pricing, customer service, and state regulations all play a role in the overall experience. But they do highlight the importance of understanding your policy and knowing what could lead to a claim being denied.
Before signing on the dotted line, it pays to research not just premiums, but also how likely an insurer is to stand by you when you need it most. After all, insurance is only as good as the claim you can actually collect.
