When it comes to solubility in water, not all compounds are created equal. Among the most soluble substances known, rubidium formate, thallium formate, and silver perchlorate stand out dramatically—each capable of dissolving at over 5,000 grams per liter of water at room temperature. That’s an extraordinary amount, far exceeding common salts like sodium chloride.
What makes these compounds so soluble? In the case of thallium formate, its high solubility is leveraged in a special dense liquid mixture known as a Clerici solution. This solution—made by combining equal parts thallium formate and thallium malonate—can reach densities high enough to make even heavy minerals float. It's historically been used in mineral separation and density measurements in laboratories.
While all three compounds dissolve rapidly, silver perchlorate often edges out slightly faster in controlled conditions due to its ionic structure and favorable interactions with water molecules. However, handling these substances requires extreme care: thallium is highly toxic, and silver perchlorate is not only corrosive but potentially explosive when concentrated.
In practical terms, if you dropped a gram of each into separate beakers of water at room temperature, you’d barely see the silver perchlorate vanish—it dissolves almost instantly. Rubidium formate and thallium formate follow closely behind, thanks to their exceptional solubility.
