Can Music Help Manage Epilepsy?

For decades, researchers have explored how sound and rhythm influence brain activity—and one name keeps surfacing in this conversation: Mozart. While music is not a cure for epilepsy, studies suggest that certain types may help reduce seizure activity, particularly in children.

One of the most cited phenomena is the so-called "Mozart effect." While initially linked to temporary improvements in cognitive performance, further research has shown more promising neurological benefits. Specifically, listening to Mozart’s compositions—particularly his Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major, K. 488—has been associated with measurable decreases in epileiform discharges, the abnormal brain patterns that precede seizures.
