What Happens to Organs After Death?

When someone dies, the body doesn’t shut down all at once. While it might seem like everything stops immediately, the reality is more gradual—some organs and tissues linger in a state of viability long after the heart has stilled and breathing has ceased.

The brain is among the first to go. Without a steady supply of oxygen, brain cells begin to die within just a few minutes of cardiac arrest. The heart follows shortly after, unable to function without neural signals and oxygen. Soon after, the liver, kidneys, and pancreas lose their function—though some of these organs can remain viable for up to an hour under certain conditions, especially if preserved properly.

But surprisingly, not everything dies at once.

Some tissues are far more resilient. Skin, tendons, heart valves, and corneas can remain viable for up to a day or even longer after death. This delayed cellular death is one reason why organ and tissue donation is possible even after someone has passed. Corneas, for example, can often be transplanted successfully if harvested within 24 hours.

This staggered shutdown challenges our instinctive idea of death as a single moment. Instead, it’s a process—one that unfolds in stages across different parts of the body. The resilience of certain tissues offers hope to those on transplant waiting lists, reminding us that even in death, life can be extended in unexpected ways.
