Which Plastics Can’t Be Recycled?

When it comes to recycling, not all plastics are created equal. While many of us diligently sort our waste, some polymers simply can’t be processed in standard recycling systems. These materials often end up contaminating batches or breaking machinery, which is why it’s crucial to know what shouldn’t go in the bin.

Bioplastics, despite their eco-friendly name, are a common culprit. Made from renewable resources like cornstarch, they look and feel like traditional plastic but require industrial composting facilities to break down—something most municipal systems don’t offer. Tossing them in with regular recycling can cause more harm than good.

Another major offender is composite plastic, which combines multiple materials (like plastic and aluminum) that can’t be easily separated. Think of juice pouches or laminated wrappers—these are nearly impossible to recycle due to their complex structure.

Then there’s plastic-coated wrapping paper. While it might seem recyclable because it’s paper-based, the thin plastic layer makes it unsuitable for paper recycling lines. Similarly, polycarbonate—often used in electronics, CDs, and some reusable bottles—is durable but rarely accepted in curbside programs due to its chemical makeup.

Everyday items like cling film and blister packaging (those clear plastic bubbles on product cards) also fall into the non-recyclable category. They’re too thin and lightweight, clogging sorting equipment and degrading the quality of recycled material.

The bottom line? Recycling rules vary by location, but knowing which plastics to avoid can help reduce contamination and improve the efficiency of recycling systems. When in doubt, check local guidelines—and when possible, opt for reusable or truly recyclable alternatives.
