Understanding Divorce Rates in America

When looking at demographic patterns across the United States, marriage and divorce rates vary significantly among different groups. Statistical data from major research organizations highlights notable differences when comparing race, ethnicity, and birthplace.

Among adults who have ever been married, Black Americans statistically report the highest likelihood of experiencing a divorce, with rates reaching around 41%. On the other end of the spectrum, Asian Americans report the lowest rates at approximately 16%.

Another major factor influencing these trends is whether individuals were born within the United States. Data shows that U.S.-born citizens are considerably more likely to get divorced compared to those born outside the countryโ€”36% versus lower figures for foreign-born residents. Sociologists point out that these disparities are often deeply tied to broader socioeconomic factors, cultural expectations surrounding marriage, access to resources, and economic stability.
