The answer lies in the late 19th century. FC Barcelona was founded in 1899, making it the elder of the two by a narrow margin. Three years later, in 1902, Real Madrid officially came into existence—though its roots trace back to a football society formed earlier, the club wasn’t formally established until then.

Interestingly, the first-ever encounter between the two teams happened the same year Real Madrid was founded. That match took place during the Concurso Madrid de Foot-Ball Association, better known today as the Copa de la Coronación—a tournament held in honor of King Alfonso XIII’s coronation. Though not an official league competition, it marked the birth of what would become known as El Clásico.
