Who Holds the Top Rank in the Indian Army?

In the hierarchy of the Indian Army, the highest attainable rank is that of General, a four-star officer who serves as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS). As of September 15, 2025, this prestigious position is held by a four-star General, responsible for commanding the entire army and advising the government on military strategy and national defense.

While the rank of Field Marshal exists as a five-star, ceremonial and honorary title, it has only been conferred twice in India’s history—on Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw in 1973 and Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa in 1986. This rank is not active in the regular chain of command and is reserved for extraordinary service during times of war or national significance.
