Sweden Joins NATO as 32nd Member

On March 7, 2024, Sweden officially became the 32nd member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), marking a historic shift in its long-standing defense policy. In a swift reversal of public and political sentiment, Sweden applied for NATO membership alongside its neighbor Finland in May 2022. The final ratification process took longer than expected—delayed by concerns from Türkiye and Hungary—but was ultimately resolved through diplomatic negotiations. With all 31 existing members approving Sweden’s accession, the country formally deposited its instrument of accession in March 2024.
