Who Controls the Largest Stake in AMD?

When it comes to semiconductor giant Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), ownership is largely in the hands of major institutional investors. Among them, The Vanguard Group, Inc. stands out as the largest shareholder, holding approximately 9.72% of the company's outstanding shares—equivalent to over 158 million shares. This positions Vanguard as a key player in AMD’s investor landscape, with significant influence over voting and corporate decisions.

Not far behind is BlackRock, Inc., another financial powerhouse, which owns roughly 9.04% of AMD—or about 147 million shares. Known for its passive index funds and active investment strategies, BlackRock’s substantial stake reflects continued confidence in AMD’s long-term growth, particularly in the CPU, GPU, and data center markets.

Completing the top three is State Street Global Advisors, Inc., holding 4.60% of shares, just over 74 million. These three institutions—Vanguard, BlackRock, and State Street—are not only AMD’s top shareholders but also some of the most influential players across global equity markets. They often represent pooled investments from millions of individual retirement accounts and mutual funds.

Other notable institutional holders include Geode Capital Management, LLC, with a 2.31% stake, and several additional asset management firms that round out the major ownership group. While no single entity holds a controlling majority, these institutions collectively shape AMD’s shareholder base with their scale and strategic voting power.

For individual investors, the dominance of such large asset managers signals strong institutional trust in AMD’s ability to compete with rivals like Intel and Nvidia, especially as the company pushes forward in AI chips and high-performance computing. The backing of firms like Vanguard and BlackRock underscores AMD’s position as a cornerstone tech stock in modern portfolios.
