Which Car Insurance Company Costs the Most?

If you're shopping for full-coverage car insurance, you might be in for a shock when you see some of the pricier options on the market. According to recent data, AIG tops the list as the most expensive insurer, with an average monthly cost of $352—or a staggering $4,227 per year. That’s significantly higher than the national average, and it’s enough to make most drivers double-check their policies.

Coming in close behind are Dairyland Insurance and Pioneer State Mutual Insurance, with average annual costs of $3,986 and $3,802, respectively. Chubb, often associated with high-end coverage for luxury vehicles, also ranks high on the list at $3,721 per year. While these companies may offer tailored service or niche benefits, their premiums clearly place them in a premium bracket—not always in a good way.

It’s important to note that high cost doesn’t always mean better value. Some of these insurers cater to specific risk profiles, such as drivers with spotty records or those needing non-standard policies. Dairyland, for instance, often serves high-risk drivers, which helps explain the elevated rates. AIG and Chubb, on the other hand, may charge more due to comprehensive offerings and personalized service, but that luxury comes at a price.

Still, for most everyday drivers, these figures should serve as a cautionary note: paying more doesn’t guarantee better protection. In fact, many mid-tier providers offer similar coverage for half the cost. The key is comparing quotes, understanding what’s included in your policy, and not assuming that a higher price tag equals superior service.

Before committing, do your homework. Sometimes, the most expensive option isn’t the best choice—it’s just the most expensive.
