Who Supplies Lithium Batteries to Tesla?

While Tesla has long been associated with its own battery production, especially through its Nevada Gigafactory in partnership with Panasonic, the company has strategically broadened its supply chain in recent years. Today, two major players—LG Chem and CATL—are key suppliers of lithium-ion battery cells for Tesla’s global operations.

LG Chem, the South Korean chemical giant, provides high-performance lithium-ion cells that are particularly favored in certain Model 3 and Model Y variants produced outside the U.S. These cells are known for their reliability and efficiency, supporting Tesla’s push for scalable, high-quality production.

Meanwhile, CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited), the world’s largest battery manufacturer based in China, supplies Tesla with its innovative LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries. These are especially used in standard-range vehicles due to their longer cycle life, enhanced safety, and lower cost. CATL’s cobalt-free chemistry also aligns with Tesla’s sustainability goals, reducing reliance on rare and ethically sensitive materials.

This multi-vendor strategy allows Tesla to avoid overdependence on a single supplier, manage costs more effectively, and quickly integrate cutting-edge battery technologies. By partnering with both LG Chem and CATL, Tesla gains flexibility in manufacturing across its global factories—from Shanghai to Berlin to Austin—ensuring consistent output even amid market fluctuations.
