Who Supplies Tesla’s Batteries?

When it comes to powering the electric revolution, Tesla doesn’t rely on a single source for its batteries. Instead, the company has built a global network of production and partnerships to keep its vehicles rolling off the line. At the heart of this effort are Tesla’s massive Gigafactories—located in Nevada, Shanghai, Berlin, and Texas—where battery packs are assembled and, in some cases, cells are produced.

While Tesla designs its battery systems in-house, it doesn’t manufacture all the cells alone. The company works closely with key partners to secure supply. Panasonic has been a long-time collaborator, primarily producing lithium-ion cells at the Nevada Gigafactory. As demand surged, Tesla diversified its supply chain to include LG Chem from South Korea and China’s CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited), both of which now supply battery cells for various Tesla models.

CATL, in particular, has played a growing role, providing cost-effective lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries used in standard-range vehicles. These LFP cells are prized for their durability and safety, making them ideal for base models. Meanwhile, Tesla continues to push forward with its own battery innovations, like the 4680 cells, aiming to reduce reliance on external suppliers over time.

This blend of in-house production and strategic partnerships allows Tesla to scale efficiently while maintaining quality. As the company expands its vehicle lineup and ventures into energy storage, a reliable and diversified battery supply chain remains a cornerstone of its success. The future of Tesla’s powertrain isn’t just about who supplies the batteries—it’s about how smartly they’re sourced, built, and integrated.
