Why Sodium and Potassium Explode in Water

Ever wonder why dropping alkali metals like sodium and potassium into water causes such a dramatic, fiery explosion? It all comes down to a super-fast chemical reaction and a whole lot of heat.

When these metals touch water, they rapidly shove one of the water molecule's hydrogen atoms out of the way. This process instantly releases hydrogen gas. At the same time, the reaction gives off an intense amount of heatβ€”enough to actually ignite the newly released hydrogen gas right there in the air.

Potassium is even more reactive than sodium because its single valence electron is further away from the nucleus, meaning it lets go of it much faster. This makes the reaction happen almost instantly, trapping the heat and triggering a literal explosion.
