Why Old Plastic Turns Yellow

Ever noticed how vintage electronics or old plastic toys develop a yellowish tint over time? It’s not just dirt — it’s a chemical reaction happening at the molecular level. Many everyday plastic items are made from a material called ABS resin, short for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. This durable polymer is popular in everything from computer keyboards to car parts, but it has a weakness: sunlight, heat, and oxygen can break it down.

The culprit behind the yellowing lies in the butadiene component of ABS. This part of the polymer contains double bonds that are highly reactive. When exposed to oxygen in the air — a process accelerated by UV light from the sun — these bonds undergo oxidation. This chemical change alters the structure of the plastic, gradually shifting its color from white or grey to an unsightly yellow or even brown.

This isn’t just cosmetic. The yellowing signals that the material is beginning to degrade, losing some of its strength and flexibility. It’s a natural aging process, much like how skin wrinkles or metal rusts. While some people use chemical treatments like retrobrighting (often involving hydrogen peroxide and UV light) to restore clarity, these methods only reverse the appearance — not the underlying structural changes.

Interestingly, not all plastics yellow the same way. Materials like polycarbonate or polypropylene resist discoloration better, which is why you’ll still see old outdoor items made from these materials looking relatively fresh. But for ABS, yellowing is almost inevitable with time and exposure.
