Why Europe Still Lags on Air Conditioning
Walk into a hotel room in Paris, Berlin, or Stockholm during summer, and you might be surprised: no air conditioning, or at best, a struggling unit that barely keeps up. Across much of Europe, especially in the north, air conditioning has never been a standard feature in homes or buildings. The reasons are deeply rooted in history, climate, and culture.
For decades, many European countries simply didn’t experience the kind of prolonged heat that makes AC essential. Winters were cold, summers mild. As a result, urban planning and architecture evolved without a focus on cooling. Thick stone walls, small windows, and shaded courtyards were enough to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures—even during occasional heat waves. Because of this, air conditioning was seen as unnecessary, even excessive, and never became part of the norm.
But times are changing. Climate change has brought longer, hotter summers to regions unprepared for them. Cities like London, Madrid, and Amsterdam now face heat waves that stretch for weeks, pushing temperatures to record highs. Still, the infrastructure lags. Many buildings lack the electrical capacity to support widespread AC use, and installing it often requires retrofitting old structures—a costly and complex process.
There’s also a cultural resistance. In many European countries, people rely on natural ventilation, shutters, and behavioral adaptations—like siestas during peak heat—to cope. Sustainability concerns also play a role; AC units consume significant energy, and in a continent pushing hard for green policies, that’s a real dilemma.
Still, demand is rising. As summers grow hotter and more intense, even the most traditional cities are beginning to rethink their stance. The question isn’t if AC will become more common in Europe—but how quickly the continent can adapt without sacrificing its environmental goals.
