Why Hydrogen Peroxide Is Falling Out of Favor
For decades, hydrogen peroxide sat in nearly every medicine cabinet as a go-to for cleaning minor cuts and scrapes. That familiar fizz when applied to a wound was often mistaken for proof of effectiveness—killing germs on contact. But over time, medical experts have shifted their stance, and today, it's no longer widely recommended for wound care. Why? The answer lies in its effect on both harmful bacteria and healthy tissue.
Hydrogen peroxide can be corrosive. While it does kill bacteria, it also damages healthy cells in the process. At concentrations higher than 10%, it’s known to be irritating—or even harmful—to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. But even the common 3% solution found in drugstores can slow the healing process by harming the delicate new cells trying to repair the injury. This cellular damage may increase scarring and delay recovery, which defeats the purpose of using it in the first place.Additionally, research has shown that our body’s natural defenses—like white blood cells and enzymatic activity—are far more effective at fighting infection than dousing a wound in an antiseptic that harms more than helps. Today, health professionals recommend simpler, gentler methods: cleaning wounds with mild soap and water, then applying a sterile bandage.
Hydrogen peroxide still has its uses—disinfecting household surfaces or removing earwax, for example—but on open skin, it's better left on the shelf. Modern wound care is less about aggressive disinfection and more about supporting the body’s innate healing abilities. In that light, moving away from hydrogen peroxide isn’t a step back—it’s progress.
